(Cusco - Cusco)
|FITNESS LEVEL||Easy - Long Bus ride|
|ACTIVITIES||Nature observation with an ecological focus|
During this tour, we will travel through the mountains of the Andes before entering the cloud forest, where we will walk in the forest in search of species of birds, orchids and monkeys. After spending the night at our lodge, we will continue by boat to the Eco-Lodge Center deep in the jungle, visiting a small lake on the way. We will sleep in a treehouse near a mammal clay lick, watching out for tapirs, deer and other animals. The following day, we will explore primary rainforest, looking for different species of monkey, parrots, and studying the unbelievable variety of plants, such as the iron tree, walking palms, and many medicinal plants. At the end of the day, we will take a night walk to observe tarantulas, insects, colorful poison dart frogs and snakes. On our final day, we will return to Cusco by boat and bus.
We will depart from Cusco in our private expedition van, and drive all day through the Andes. The bus will stop frequently during the trip, to permit short visits to small Andean towns, the pre-Inca archaeological site known as Ninamarca, and the colonial town of Paucartambo, where there will be time for a short walk around the town as your guide explains the history of this fascinating community. Leaving Paucartambl, we will drive 3,500 meters, before descending into Manu National Park. Within the park, we will explore the diversity of cloud forest habitats, with their different species of plants, animals and birds. Vegetation here includes orchids and primitive ferns, and wildlife includes Peru’s national bird, the cock-of-the-rock, and the rare woolly monkey. In the evening we will arrive at Pilcopata.
Overnight in a local lodge
After a comfortable night’s sleep at our lodge, we will leave for a 3-hour walk, exploring deep into the jungle. This is an opportunity to learn about the many species of medicinal plants used by local people. And if we are lucky, we may also spot large mammals, such as giant anteaters. Back at the lodge, after lunch we will have the opportunity to choose to go for a refreshing swim in the river, or a comfortable bath at the lodge. After time to relax, we will head out for a trip to the lake, where we will board a wooden raft. This is an excellent location for birdwatching. We will return to the lodge in time for dinner. Optional night walk (to see caiman).
Overnight in a local lodge
Very early in the morning, we will take a 15-minute boat ride downriver to the parrot clay lick, to observe how many different species of parrots, parakeets and some macaws create a noisy and colorful show. Following this parrot clay lick visit, your guide will continue the excursion by providing in-depth information about the forest. We will take our motorized boat back to the lodge, and breakfast we will return by boat to Atalaya, where our private bus will be waiting to take us back to Cusco. We will return to Cusco via the cloud forest and Paucartambo, arriving in the city in the late afternoon.
