FAQ – Traveling to Peru, Cusco & Machu Picchu

Safety & Travel Preparation

Is it safe to travel to Peru right now?
Yes. Tourist destinations like Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, Arequipa, Puno, and the Amazon are functioning normally. As with any international trip, it is recommended to travel with certified operators and follow local guidelines.

What is the best time of the year to travel?
Peru is a year-round destination.

Do I need a visa to enter Peru?
Most nationalities do not require a tourist visa for stays up to 90 days. A valid passport is mandatory. (Recommended: check requirements with Peruvian Immigration before travel.)

What type of travel insurance do you recommend?
A plan that covers high-altitude medical evacuation, trekking accidents, delays, cancellations, and lost baggage. It is highly recommended for mountain and Amazon travel.

 Altitude – Lima 0–100 m | Cusco 3,400 m | Puno 3,800 m | Arequipa 2,300 m

Does altitude sickness affect everyone the same way?
No. Each person reacts differently. Most travelers only experience mild fatigue or a temporary headache.

How to prevent altitude sickness?
Hydrate well, eat light, rest calmly the first day, avoid alcohol, and consult your doctor beforehand if you need preventive medication.

How many days of acclimatization are recommended before Machu Picchu or trekking?
1 to 3 nights in Cusco or the Sacred Valley are enough for most travelers.

Is it better to sleep first in the Sacred Valley or Cusco?
For altitude-sensitive travelers, the Sacred Valley may be a better first night choice because it sits lower than Cusco.

Machu Picchu & the Inca Trail

When should I book Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail?

Book in advance. The Inca Trail can sell out months ahead. During high season, Machu Picchu tickets and train seats also run out quickly.

What is the best route to get to Machu Picchu?
The most comfortable option is train from Ollantaytambo → Aguas Calientes, then bus to the citadel. Total travel time from Cusco is approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes, including transfers.

How long does the visit to Machu Picchu last?
Between 2 and 4 hours, depending on your assigned circuit and schedule.

What is the difference between Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu?

Are drones allowed in Machu Picchu?
No. They are prohibited inside the sanctuary and in Aguas Calientes.

Trekking & Adventure in the Andes

Do I need to be in excellent physical shape for the Inca Trail or the Salkantay Trek?
You don’t need to be a top athlete, but you do need to enjoy hiking in the mountains and have acceptable fitness. Acclimatization is more important than strength. Light cardiovascular training before your trip helps.

What equipment is included in treks?
Tents, sleeping pads, a dining tent, and cooking equipment are usually included. Trekking poles and sleeping bags can be rented. Always check details per route.

What if I cannot continue the trek?
Reputable agencies have trained guides, safety protocols, communication systems and evacuation plans. Traveler safety always comes first.

Can I trek during the rainy season?
Yes, with flexibility and proper gear. The Inca Trail closes in February for maintenance, and trekking during this month is not recommended due to heavy rains.

 Amazon / Peruvian Rainforest

Is it safe to travel to the Amazon?
Yes, with licensed lodges and professional guides. It is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world.

Do I need vaccines?
Depending on the region and traveler profile. Yellow fever is recommended for some areas, but it is not mandatory to enter Peru. Always consult your doctor.

What are conditions like in the lodges?
Varies by budget. High-end eco-lodges offer comfort and amenities. Local lodges may have limited electricity and internet — part of the rainforest experience.

 Spiritual Travel & Andean Ceremonies

What are San Pedro and Ayahuasca ceremonies?
Ancestral rituals of introspection and expanded awareness, guided by trained specialists. They involve sacred plant medicines and must be practiced in a safe, controlled and supervised environment.

Are these ceremonies safe?
Yes, when led by experienced masters with health screening, emotional preparation and post-ceremony integration. They should never be treated as entertainment or thrill tourism.

What are the “Offering to Pachamama”, “Flower Bath” and “Energy Cleansing”?
Traditional rituals of purification and gratitude to harmonize personal energy and connect with nature.

 Logistics during the trip

Can I pay by credit card in Peru?
Yes, in most tourist areas. In remote communities, cash is recommended.

Is tap water safe to drink?
No. Bottled or filtered water is advised.

Does Uber work in Cusco?
Yes. For punctuality and safety, formal taxis and private transfers arranged with your agency or hotel are recommended.

Are there ATMs in the Sacred Valley and Aguas Calientes?
Yes, but withdrawal limits may apply, and not all support USD withdrawals.

Payments, Deposits & Cancellations (Machu Picchu & Trains)

What payment methods are most common?
Credit card, bank transfer, and electronic payment for online bookings. At the office in Cusco or Aguas Calientes, in Cash.

Is a deposit required to secure a booking?
Yes. Train tickets, Machu Picchu entrances and trekking permits require non-refundable deposits, except in cases of force majeure.

How do refunds and cancellations work?
Train and Machu Picchu tickets are non-refundable. Except in cases of force majeure. Natural disasters or strikes. Tours, hotels and transfers vary depending on notice period and company policies. Always review conditions before booking.
