This neo-colonial city of white volcanic stone is located at 2380 meters (7,850 feet) above sea level in a fertile, irrigated valley surrounded by desert between the Andes and Peru’s Pacific coast. Known as “The City of Eternal Spring,” Arequipa receives less than 150mm of annual rainfall and the sun shines all year round. The canyons of Colca and Cotahuasi can be reached easily from Arequipa. At more than 3400 meters (11,220 feet) deep, they are considered among the deepest canyons in the world, and are home to traditional Andean culture and native fauna, including condors.
After your arrival in the city of Arequipa, you will be met at the airport and escorted to your hotel. You will have the rest of the day free to explore the city and get used to the altitude (2400 meters / 7,920 feet) and/or participate in optional excursions within the city. All visitors to Arequipa should see the colonial-era convent of Santa Catalina.
Overnight in Arequipa
After breakfast, we will begin our bus trip through the volcanic landscape of this part of southern Peru. We will be passing wild herds of alpacas and vicuñas, and we will stop at several viewing points to admire the surrounding landscape. At around noon we will arrive at the village of Chivay. After checking in to the hotel, you will have plenty of time to enjoy a relaxing visit to the nearby La Calera natural hot springs, before returning to the lodge for a good night’s rest.
Overnight in Chivay
We will start our day early with a morning bus ride to the Cruz del Condor viewing point. Standing at the edge of the abyss, we will have mesmerizing views of Colca Canyon. This is the best place to observe majestic condors in their natural habitat, as they rise from the valley on the morning thermals. We will have plenty of time to enjoy this spectacular sight before returning to Chivay and then to Arequipa, arriving in the city at around nightfall.
