Hiking, camping, nature exploration & history |
This extraordinary adventure will take you from the sacred peak of Mount Salkantay (6271 meters / 20,700 feet) to the Inca city of Machu Picchu, in the company of an expert guide who will provide you with insight into the customs, history and nature of this part of Peru.
As ancient Inca pathways lead you deeper into remote areas, and as you contemplate high Andean scenery dominated by snow-capped peaks, you are likely to see condors soaring high above on thermal air currents.
And in the humid cloud forest, your guide will assist you in identifying many species of orchids and bromeliads, as well as the hundreds of species of birds that make their home in this unique ecosystem.
An early morning scenic bus ride lasting approximately five hours will take us to the trailhead at Soraypampa (3937 meters / 12,916 feet). Upon arrival, we will be met by our mule drivers, with their mules and saddlehorses. After a short introduction, we will begin our hike by following a local trail on a gentle ascent in the direction of the base of Mount Salkantay (6271 meters / 20,700 feet). After a stop for lunch, we will continue to our camp at Salkantay Pampa, where we will spend the night close to the spectacular Salkantay glacier, so be prepared for a cold night!
Camp at Salkantay Pampa (4168 meters / 13,674 feet)
After a delicious breakfast at this stunning location, a three- to four-hour ascent will take us to Salkantay Pass (4650 meters / 15,255 feet), where as we contemplate the magnificent views we may also observe vizcachas (a rabbit-like animal related to the chinchilla) and condors in their natural habitat. From here, we will descend into the hot, tropical climate of the cloud forest. A long, gradual descent will bring us around mid-afternoon to our camp with a beautiful view of the mountains.
Camp at Huayraq Macchay (3940 meters / 12,926 feet)
Today we will enjoy a relaxing walk along the banks of the Salkamayo River, passing volcanic formations, waterfalls, and increasingly lush vegetation. In the afternoon we will arrive at Qollpa Pampa (2900 meters / 9514 feet) in time for lunch. From here, we will board local transpor to our camp at Lucmabamba (1 hour). This ride will take us through maize, passion fruit and coffee plantations. As soon as we arrive at the camp, there will be the option to visit a coffee plantation and learn from locals about the harvesting and roasting of organic coffee (extra cost).
Camp at Lucmabamba (2020 meters / 9514 feet)
After breakfast, we will pass through coffee plantations as we climb up to El Mirador (2800 meters / 9186 feet), from where there is an exceptional view of Machu Picchu, the legendary Lost City of the Incas. You will have ample time to appreciate the scenery while we eat lunch at the Llaqtapata vantage point (2650 meters / 8,694 feet), with both Machu Picchu and Mount Salkantay dominating the landscape. After a brief rest, we will begin the two-hour descent to the Machu Picchu hydroelectric station, from here we will take a train to Aguas Calientes, if there is enough time, we can also hike this last stretch to Aguas Calientes! Arriving in the late afternoon, there will be time to relax in the natural hot springs before dinner, or simply enjoy a good rest at the hotel.
Overnight stay in Aguas Calientes (2000 meters / 6561 feet)
After an early breakfast, we will take one of the first buses up to Machu Picchu to enjoy the morning at this magical setting. Your expert guide will provide you with information regarding the history of this unique archaeological site, before we return to Aguas Calientes in the afternoon in time for the train that will take us to Cusco. Arriving in the city, you will be transferred to your hotel.
