Cusco is one of the most beautiful cities in Peru. The magnificent imperial capital of the Incas was reshaped by the Spaniards in the 16th century, and the historic city we see today is composed of Inca temples and palaces, Catholic churches and Spanish mansions. The old city can be explored easily on foot, from the streets around the main plaza, lined with Inca palace walls, to the narrow streets of the artists’ quarter of San Blas, and the lively area around the central market.
Machu Picchu, voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, is located in high mountain forests, in the transition zone between the Andes and the Amazon basin. The setting for this city, surrounded by green vegetation and white snow peaks, is overwhelmingly beautiful. Machu Picchu is composed of residential areas, temples, palaces and agricultural textures, and this well-preserved city lost for more than four hundred years is the greatest surviving testament to the skill of Inca architects.
