Posada Amazonas is a thirty-room lodge owned by the community of Infierno and jointly managed with Rainforest Expeditions. With its accessible location, excellent wildlife observation opportunities, cultural context and comfortable accommodation, Posada Amazonas is ideal for a two-night introduction to the Amazon rainforest. It is built within a 2,000-hectare private communal reserve adjacent to Tambopata National Reserve.
Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, you will be met by our guides and escorted to the river port from where we will continue to Posada Amazonas by boat. During the forty-five-minute trip it is possible to observe many species of birds in the forests on either side of the river. Arriving at Posada Amazonas, you will receive a short introductory presentation and a complete briefing regarding the lodge and the Eseja Ecotourism Project. In the afternoon, we will go for a twenty-minute walk from Posada Amazonas to the thirty-meter canopy tower. A secure stairway provides safe access to the platforms above. From the top there are spectacular views of vast expanses of forest sliced through by the Tambopata River. Toucans, parrots and macaws can be seen flying against the horizon. Colorful flocks of birds might even land in the treetops close to you! After dinner at the lodge, there will be a lecture on ecotourism.
Overnight stay at Posada Amazonas
Today you will have a very active morning. After an early breakfast, we will visit the Tres Chimbadas oxbow lake and take a long, relaxed canoe ride around it. We will be looking for giant river otters, turtles, hoatzins and wading birds. Later, we will continue our exploration by visiting the parrot clay lick just a twenty-minute walk from Posada Amazonas. From a strategic viewpoint located about twenty meters from the lick, you will see dozens of parrots and parakeets descend to consume the clay on the river bank. Species such as mealy, blue-headed parrots and dusky-headed parakeets are frequent visitors to this clay lick. The clay lick is active at dawn, during the late mornings and in the mid-afternoon.
After returning to the lodge for lunch, in the afternoon we will take a short boat ride downriver to a trail designed by the staff of Centro Ñape. Centro Ñape is a communal organization that produces medicines from forest plants for patients who come to their clinic. They have created a trail focused on the many medicinal (and other) uses of selected plants. After dinner at Posada Amazonas you will have the option of hiking at night when most mammals are active but rarely seen.
